theory and tests on torqued cylindrical shells

Bifurcation buckling of thin monocoque cylindrical shells under uniform torque. Longer and/or thinner shells have higher values of the so-called “Batdorf” parameter, Z. The points show test results. Even the very thinnest shells (largest Z) exhibit much less imperfection sensitivity than the same shell under uniform axial compression.

Shells and plates under uniform in-plane shear exhibit post-buckling stability as diagonal tension along the long axis of the buckles develops in the far-post-buckling regime.

L is the length of the cylindrical shell; a is its radius; h is its thickness, and D is the bending stiffness of the shell wall; taucr is the bifurcation buckling stress.
