The test specimen after the cyclic loading.

The “X” pattern in the steel plates results from the cyclic alternation of the direction of diagonal tension in the far postbucklied steel plates during cyclic loading.

Note that part of the nonlinear (hysteresis) behavior is caused by local buckling of the flanges of one of the I-beams in the structure.
