Professor Maher N. Bismarck-Nasr (1940 – 2008)

Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, ITA, São José dos Campos, Brazil

Biography:
Born on October 18, 1940, in Cairo, Egypt, Maher Nasr Bismarck Nasr was a professor at ITA for more than thirty consecutive years. He graduated in Aeronautical Engineering (1964) and obtained the title of Master (1967) by the University of Cairo. In 1970, he completed his PhD in Aeroelasticity from the University of Paris (Faculty of Sciences of Orsay), during which he met Maria Eunice Marinho Bismarck Nasr and moved to Brazil. He began his professional activities as an engineer at Embraer , where he worked for twenty years. He married in January 1971 and had two daughters, Paula Bismarck Nasr and Elizabeth Maria Bismarck Nasr. Since 1972, he has lectured at the ITA as lecturer and guest lecturer. He joined the Institute as a lecturer in 1991, having taught for 16 years uninterruptedly, during which time he passed on to his students, in addition to his academic and scientific teachings, an example of dedication, respect and love of work, confirmed by the numerous honors he received throughout his life. As proof of excellence of his actions, he demonstrated a vast scientific production, having published 59 works, in Brazil and abroad, between articles and book chapters. He has guided more than a hundred theses, dissertations and graduate work. He is the author of three books on aeronautical structures, aeroelasticity and finite element study in applied mechanics. Its direct contribution to the Brazilian aeronautical industry is marked by its participation in the design and implementation of the Embraer Soil Vibration Testing Laboratory (1970s) and the design and implementation of the CAD / CAM / CAE System, also at Embraer of 80). In 1985 he was decorated by the then Ministry of Aeronautics, with the medal "Merit Santos-Dumont". Professor Bismarck passed away on January 21, 2008, leaving an immense longing and also the example of a life full of achievements.
