Saturn V propellant tank

This and the next many slides show very large cylindrical shells and buckling of them.

Photograph supplied by Michael Nemeth, NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia

This slide shows the first NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Boeing fuel tank for the S-IC. The large tank is hanging in the stand (REF: 3-3589-1)

Progress in space flight technology and the need for the ability to launch heavier and heavier payloads stimulated the development of facilities for testing very, very large shell structures. This and the next many slides show several examples of large test rigs and the buckling of large shells tested in these large rigs.
