Dr. Jerry G. Williams with large stiffened cylindrical shell under combined axial compression, torque and bending

Photograph taken in 1974 at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. The large stiffened cylindrical shell is subjected to combined axial compression, torque and bending. One can see local buckling of the skin between stringers, some stringer/skin separation, and some stringer failure. The local skin buckling exhibits the characteristics of buckling under axial compression in some bays and the characteristics of buckling under in-plane shear loading in other bays.
