Water-filled column under axial compression applied in such a way that the structural part sees only tensile stresses

From: Den Hartog, J. P., Comments made in a keynote lecture given at the Third Canadian Congress of Applied Mechanics, Calgary, Canada, May 17-21, 1971

The column is loaded in axial compression via frictionless pistons. Even though the cylindrical shell experiences only tensile stresses, it buckles as a column at the Euler buckling load.
