Post-buckled, localized, non-axisymmetric deformation of internally pressurized, axially compressed cylindrical shell

From Leonard A. Harris, Herbert S. Suer, William T. Skene and Roland J. Benjamin, "the stability of thin-walled unstiffened circular cylinders under axial compression including the effects of internal pressure", Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, Vol. 24, No. 8, August 1957, pp. 587- 596

The post-buckled localized deformations occur near the top end of the internally pressurized cylindrical shell. Compare this post-buckled pattern, which is elongated in the circumferential direction and shortened in the axial direction because of the internal pressure, a situation in which you have hoop tension combined with axial compression.
