EXPERIENCE:
January 2001 - : Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Research on thermal buckling of bars, plates, and shells. Writing books on buckling, plasticity, and design of composite structures.

July 1981 - December 2000: Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Taught graduate courses in mechanics of composite materials, analysis of laminated composite structures, design of composite structures, buckling, advanced mechanics of materials, energy methods, elasticity, and plasticity, plus research and undergraduate teaching.

August - October 1991: Visiting Professor of Strength of Composite Structures, Moscow Aviation Technology Institute, Moscow, Russia. Taught design of composite structures to fifth-year students (master's degree equivalent) as part of VPI&SU - MATI Faculty Exchange Program.

July 1982 - June 1983 and July 1984 - November 1987: Director and Chairman of the Administrative Board, Center for the Composite Materials and Structures, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Led a group of over forty faculty in ten departments as the largest and most-active composite materials research group in the world.

March 1980: Visiting Professor of Mechanics, South China Institute of Technology, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. Taught mechanics of composite materials as part of first U. S. - China Lecture Exchange Program run by the National Academy of Sciences and the U. S. State Department.

August 1975 - July 1981: Professor of Solid Mechanics, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Taught graduate courses in mechanics of composite materials, buckling, energy methods, advanced mechanics of materials, and plasticity, plus research and undergraduate teaching.

May 1971 - January 1972: Acting Director, Solid Mechanics Center, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

August 1970 - August 1975: Associate Professor of Solid Mechanics, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

July 1966 - August 1970: Member of the Technical Staff, Theoretical Mechanics Section, The Aerospace Corporation, San Bernardino, California. Research, planning, and technical direction for reentry vehicle nosetip thermal stress analysis and shell buckling.
