Buckling modes of the ellipsoidal head with a central (rigid) nozzle

From the same paper as the previous image.

The critical buckling mode under a compressive axial load applied to the central nozzle, which is replaced by a rigid segment in the finite element model, corresponds to n = 1 circumferential wave (tilting).

b) shows a profile view of the n = 1 buckling mode.

c) shows the buckling mode under axial tension applied to the central nozzle. The critical buckling mode in this case has about 9 circumferential waves (n = 9). This buckling mode is analogous to that shown 2 images ago.

Since the central nozzle axial load is applied along the axis of revolution, the pre-buckling state of the shell is axisymmetric.
