“Recently, attention has been drawn to similarities and differences between models of discrete struts on elastic foundations, and regularized chains of constrained granular media [25]. This has led to the idea that layered and granular media may show similar behaviour under the same form of loading. More recently still, the single force chain model has been extended to embrace a number of parallel chains, constrained to act together much as the layers of the previous section [14] [See the previous slide.]. For certain chosen parameter values, equilibrium solutions found using Auto [15] are seen to have the appearance of shear bands, similar in form to the kink bands of figure 1” [See the previous slide.]
