Top: % buckled capsules versus external concentration of PSS; Bottom: buckling pressure v. normalized wall thickness d=t/R squared

From the same paper as the previous 2 images.

The critical external osmotic pressure, π(crit), that leads to buckling of most of the capsules can be determined from the dependence of percentage of buckled capsules on the concentration of external PSS (a). Then, variation of the normalized capsule wall thickness d=t/R for given radius R demonstrates the known (from the classical buckling formula for a perfect spherical shell) quadratic dependency of the critical pressure on the wall thickness normalized by R (b). In this particular case the effective elastic modulus of the multilayered capsule wall is obtained from the equation, π(crit) = 4.99E20d^2.
