Buckled internally pressurized aluminum shell under axial compression

This and the next four slides show buckling of very thin axially compressed cylindrical shells stabilized by internal pressure.

This slide is from Leonard A. Harris, Herbert S. Suer, William T. Skene and Roland J. Benjamin, "the stability of thin-walled unstiffened circular cylinders under axial compression including the effects of internal pressure", Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, Vol. 24, No. 8, August 1957, pp. 587- 596

The presence of stabilizing internal pressure significantly reduces the imperfection sensitivity of axially compressed very thin monocoque cylindrical shells.
