support structure of offshore oil platform

Some offshore oil platforms have supporting structures that consist of intersecting cylindrical shells with impressively large diameters. Notice the size of the two men in this photograph.

The thin cylindrical shell support members can buckle either as columns (Euler buckling) or as thin shells. Buckling would be caused by excessive compression that might occur during storms from large waves such as that shown in the next slide.
