EXAMPLE 7, Slide 7: Behaviors, design margins, and weight/area of a GENOPT-optimized, axially compressed, composite, truss-core sandwich cylinder

This slide is taken from Table 4 of the 2011 GENOPT paper. Listed here are the behaviors, design margins, and objective (weight per area) of the optimized composite truss-core sandwich cylindrical shell.

The critical margins are shown in bold face.

SOME DEFINITIONS:
F.S. = factor of safety
LOCBUK(1) = local buckling under load set no. 1
LOCBUKF = factor of safety for local buckling
GENBUK(1) = general buckling under load set no. 1
GENBUKF = factor of safety for general buckling
STRMi(j,k) = maximum stress in material i, load set j, stress component k
k = 1 = tensile stress along fibers in a composite ply
k = 2 = compressive stress along fibers in a composite ply
k = 3 = tensile stress transverse to fibers in a composite ply
k = 4 = compressive stress transverse to fibers in a composite ply
k = 5 = in-plane shear stress in a composite ply
STRM1A = maximum allowable stress
STRM1F = factor of safety for stress
