John C. Halpin served as Chief Engineer of the Aeronautical System Center, the largest of three products centers under the Air Force Material Command, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, for more than 30 years. There, he oversaw all United States Air Force aircraft development activities, while serving as technical advisor to the Federal Aviation Administration in formulating certification concepts for composite airframes.
An American Society of Composites Fellow, Dr. Halpin has served as advisor to several United States Air Force and Department of Defemnse program offices and as a consultant to the aeronautical industry. He has published more than 80 papers in composite materials, airframe structures, structural reliability, and materials processing, and is the author of two books, including the groundbreaking "Primer on Composite Materials Analysis," published in 1969.
Dr. Halpin also served as editor of the 1969–70 book series Progress in Materials Science and, through his work, introduced laminated composite technology to the aircraft structural design and materials engineering communities. He is also a co-founder of the Journal of Composite Materials and is a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering.
