Professor Werner C. Rheinboldt

Honorary professor at Technical University of Munich (TUM) Dept. of Mathematics since 2007
Formerly:
Dept. of Mathematics, University of Pittsburgh, USA (1978-1998)

Career:
In 1947 Professor Rheinboldt began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Heidelberg, graduating in 1952. After working for a year in an aircraft laboratory in Duisburg, he continued his studies at the University of Freiburg and received his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in applied mathematics in 1955. He was subsequently awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland. He then worked in the Computation Laboratory of the US National Bureau of Standards. He began his full-time academic career in 1959 at Syracuse University. In 1963 he accepted an appointment as professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland where he developed a new Computer Science Center which he directed until 1965. He remained at the university as professor of mathematics and computer science until 1978 when he was appointed to the Andrew W. Mellon Chair of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. On his retirement in 1998 he was awarded emeritus status. Throughout his academic career Professor Rheinboldt received support for his research from various sources, including the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and the National Air and Space Administration.
