During a long hike the top part of the tired hiker's pants tend to slide downward a bit. However, the bottom parts of the pant legs are stopped by the boots and therefore become axially compressed. Therefore, the bottom parts of the pant legs buckle in a mode similar to that displayed near the instep of Falstaff's boots in the previous slide. and that displayed in the right-most photograph of the axially compressed thick cylindrical shell shown in the next slide.
